The domain name system is a complex, constantly evolving hierarchy. Just as the meager beginnings of the ARPAnet evolved into the gigantic worldwide network we know as the web today, domains have evolved from "a crazy waste of money" back in the early 90's to the cut-throat, speculative market we see today.
